Although the holiday season may be our busiest time at the Center the
needs of our community continue throughout the year. As the needs for
more food, more financial support and expanded literacy programs grow,
we are working hard to meet those request for help.
Two of the areas we are especially proud of involve our new literacy
program and our expanded adult computer classes. With the addition
of full time literacy specialist Sophia Byard, we are starting to
introduce programs that focus on school readiness, corrective reading
and early literacy. As a complement to the children’s programs we have
also introduced programs for the parents which helps them understand
how their children (ages 0-36 months) develop and learn.
Our new adult
computer classes have been a huge success with every class filled to
capacity. Others are waiting to get a chance to join our outstanding
computer lab Director Sqwrcene Davis as she provides a wide range of
computer training for participants at all skill levels.
The Center is also looking forward to expanding more services to the
Oldsmar community and we have initiated meetings with the Oldsmar
Mayor’s office to help find suitable locations for expanded programs.
As an active community participant, the Center will be the host of this
year’s March 21st 3rd Friday “ Celebration staged on Main
St , down town Safety Harbor. This special event will be a fund raising
event for the Center with green liquid, fun food and Irish music to top
of the night.
April fifth we will be staging another Green event in the form of a free
community block party. With seven years of experience behind us, we will
be producing this generous party with an emphasis on fun, recycling,
saving our environmental resources, encouraging health prevention with
full day of food, music and entertainment. This is a wonderful
opportunity for the Center to offer community organizations, faith based
groups and business to work together to show the wide range of services
available to our community residents.
Just when we catch our breath, we will start to work on this year’s Back
to School fund raiser sponsored by Thomas/McPherson Salon. This year it
is slated to be held on May 31st, 2008. Last year’s project
was so successful that we were able to purchase school back packs,
filled with new supplies for over 1000 area children. We hope that this
year’s project will match that great success.
